Two New Artworks Approved By The City of Coral Gables Commission

The City of Coral Gables’ Commission unanimously approved two new artworks. “Secrets that the Wind Carries Away” by Marcel Doucet, dedicated to telling the story of the Bahamian community who built Coral Gables, which will be featured at Merrick Park across from City Hall; and “Planting Polinators” by Xavier Cortada, a piece being donated by the Coral Gables Garden Club in honor of the club’s centennial, which will be featured outside the Coral Gables Branch Library.

A third art piece was deferred following concerns brought up by Commissioner Ariel Fernandez and other members of the Commission regarding the lack of public input. Commissioner Fernandez asked the City Attorney to work on Legislation requiring that all future art works require a public meeting for neighbors to be aware what art pieces are being proposed for installation in their neighborhoods, prior to the art being presented to the City’s Art Advisory Panel. The measure will be brought back to the Commission in late September or early October.
