State of Florida Cuts Gables Cinema And Others’ Funding
Just one week ago, Coral Gables Art Cinema received shocking news that the state of Florida vetoed $32 million earmarked for arts and cultural institutions in the 2024/2025 state budget. This is the first time no money will be allocated for arts and culture programs by the state (Herald-Tribune).
What this means for Coral Gables Art Cinema is significant: $101,637 (10%) will be cut from their budget, which will affect their entire operations immediately and into the next fiscal year.
As a nonprofit organization, they rely on public and government support to fund their high-quality programs and events, discussions with filmmakers and experts, special offerings like 35mm and 70mm film projections, low-cost family programs, and more.
The cinema serves as a gathering place for community, conversation, and culture. Last year, they served more than 38,000 patrons and showed 221 films from around the globe, with a third of them accompanied by an introduction or conversation with visiting artists and local partners.
Funding support keeps their programs thriving and ensures that their prices remain affordable and accessible to all. Importantly, their work as a nonprofit arts and culture organization fuels the local economy and helps our community thrive.
Americans for the Arts partnered with the Division of Arts and Culture and Citizens for Florida Arts, Inc. to measure the economic impact of Florida’s arts and culture industry.
The data reveal findings including:
• Florida’s arts and cultural industry generated $5.8 billion of economic activity, including $2.9 billion by nonprofit arts and culture organizations.
• This economic activity supports 91,270 full-time jobs and generates $3.8 billion in resident household income.
• Florida’s arts and cultural industry delivers $694.7 million in local, state, and federal government revenue.
