New Historic Marker Honors The Rich History Of The MacFarlane Homestead And Golden Gate Subdivisions In Coral Gables

The City of Coral Gables Commission recently unveiled a new historic marker honoring the rich history of the MacFarlane Homestead and Golden Gate subdivisions, located south of S. Dixie Highway and near the former Florida East Coast Railway. These communities, home to many African American residents during segregation, were established by pioneers from the Bahamas and the southern United States who worked in Coral Gables, Miami and Coconut Grove. The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church played a key role in fostering unity, while the Dade Training School, later renamed George Washington Carver School, served as an essential educational institution.

The marker honors the contributions of these vibrant neighborhoods and their residents, whose dedication and resilience have left a lasting impact on Coral Gables’ history. Through efforts by the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association, the MacFarlane Homestead subdivision was recognized as a local historic site in 1989 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. This marker stands as a testament to their enduring legacy.
