Job Description

Position Overview:

The Chief Curator is responsible for the overall development of the Museum’s curatorial programs; the coordination of the museum’s exhibitions, research, publications, acquisitions, and donor contacts related to PAMM’s exhibitions and permanent collection; and the conceptualization of curatorial integrated programs to enrich and expand cultural opportunities for the museum’s diverse audiences.

The Chief Curator is a visible and accessible role expected to build strong relationships with their team, the trustees, artists in the community, and campus stakeholders.

The Chief Curator delegates curatorial and administrative duties to respective staff, as appropriate. The Chief Curator leads the collegial process by which the curatorial staff research, develop and realize the annual exhibition schedule programs in support of the Museum’s mission. The Chief Curator collaborates closely with Collection and Exhibition Support staff, as well as outside curators and artists, to assure professional, efficient, and quality presentation of all designated exhibitions.

 

Essential Functions included, but are not limited to: 

  • Exhibitions
    • Conceptualize and research an exhibition strategy that support the Museum’s mission for discussion and review with Director and presentation to Trustees.
    • Lead the annual planning of the exhibition schedule, including those exhibitions initiated by PAMM as well as traveling exhibitions developed by other institutions.
    • Initiate and develop exhibition proposals, with required visual and budgetary documentation.
    • Work with Curatorial staff to develop their own proposals that reflect the overall goals of the exhibition program.
    • Oversee work with artists, commissioned either work or temporary installations.
    • Oversee relations with outside institutions in developing exhibition loan contracts, work timetables, and installation schedules in collaboration with appropriate PAMM staff.
    • With the Director, develop an annual publications plan. Oversee development and production of exhibition publications and texts, printed and electronic.
    • Oversee relations with exhibition donors and lenders.
    • Review of incoming exhibition proposals, including review for artistic merit, mission appropriateness, budget, and scheduling factors.
    • Ensure proper dissemination of exhibition schedule and related information to all PAMM departments. Select and distribute all visual materials for promotion of exhibitions. 
    • In coordination with the Chief Preparator, oversee exhibition installation design, graphics, and exhibition layout.
    • Oversee development of all exhibition reports.
    • Oversee acknowledgement of donors, lenders, and all participants for designated exhibitions.
  • Staff Leadership
    • Lead staff by fostering and encouraging innovation around new models for partnering (both internally and externally), and for exploring new creative relationships with artists central to the PAMM mission.
    • Encourage and facilitate a culture of collaboration across programmatic and supporting departments to ensure effective communication, efficiencies, and accountability.
    • Effectively navigate through the complexity of key issues, problems and opportunities to affect actions; guide staff to proactively build and align stakeholders, capabilities, and resources to achieve institutional objectives.
    • Lead cross-departmental efforts toward long-range planning to align with the organization’s mission and vision.
    • Work closely with senior leadership to attract, develop, and retain talent to ensure that people with the right skills and motivations to meet institutional needs are in the right place at the right time.
    • Proactively model the importance of timely collegial interaction, personal accountability, communication, and exchange across disciplinary boundaries.
    • Foster collaborative interdepartmental relationships for programming, fundraising, budgeting, marketing and communications, research, audience development, education, public programs and program services.
  • Collection
    • Strategize policies for growth of the collection in support of the Museum’s mission for discussion and review with the Director.
    • Develop and maintain close relationships with collectors locally, nationally and internationally.
    • Actively solicit donations of appropriate works of art.
    • Contribute to research, development, and organization of artist and donor files for collection and Curatorial Research Library.
    • Oversee research and publications on collection.
    • Act as principal liaison with Acquisitions Committee and affiliate collecting committees, or designate other staff members.
  • General Duties
    • Represent the Curatorial Department in meetings with the Director to establish overall institutional policies.
    • Attend Board meetings when called upon and make presentations pertinent to the Museum’s Curatorial Programs.
    • Collaborate with marketing staff to select visual materials and develop texts for promotions exhibitions; assist in identifying exhibition promotion opportunities.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with members of arts community, including artists, curators, educators, writers, journalists, collectors, and cultural institutions.
    • Provide expertise and information to foundation relations for grant applications and for general fundraising activities, as needed. Help identify potential donors in conjunction with designated exhibitions.
    • Develop and participate in travel tours for Museum affiliates.
    • Act as liaison, or delegate staff liaisons in coordination with the Director, to the museum’s various affiliate groups.
    • Undertake appropriate tasks as assigned by the Director. Responsible for budget development and oversight on designated non-exhibition projects.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements

Required Degree: 4-Year Degree/Bachelor’s Degree

 

Qualifications:

  • Applied knowledge of professional museum principles, practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of research tools and methodology
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Very flexible and helpful; occasional evening and weekend hours required
  • Must have mastery of English language; both written and verbal
  • Work Experience:
    • Minimum of 7 years’ management-level museum experience required
    • Minimum of 10 years progressively applied curatorial experience
    • Demonstrated experience managing substantial department, project and program
    • Ability to work with artists, collectors, and donors
    • Ability to communicate to the media and on-camera interviews
    • Ability to work within a diverse cultural community
    • Diplomatic skills

Physical Demands

  • Walk, bend, lift (up to 25 pounds) files, office supplies an electronic equipment.  
  • Finger dexterity to pick up paper and use computer keyboard. 
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.   
  • Ability to hear in normal tones including telephone and face-to-face conversation.
