Broward Cultural Division Names Lea Rekow As The New Public Art Administrator
Broward Cultural Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Lea Rekow as its new Public Art Administrator. Dr. Rekow has extensive experience in the arts as a curator and non-profit leader and has managed public art initiatives both in the U.S. and abroad. Prior to joining Broward Cultural Division, Dr. Rekow served as an independent consultant for non-profit organizations and artists.
Dr. Rekow’s leadership roles include Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, founding director of Green My Favela, an urban gardening and public arts initiative based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Executive Director of the Wright-Ingraham Institute, a non-profit that operates at the intersection of the environment, arts, design, and educational sectors.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lea Rekow as our new Public Art Administrator,” said Philip Dunlap, director of the Broward Cultural Division. “Her extraordinary background in arts and culture will be a tremendous asset as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Broward County’s Public Art & Design Program in 2025 and embark on an exciting course for future.”
Dr. Rekow curated and managed numerous festivals, installations, and events in New York that contributed to the city’s cultural landscape while Executive Director of Gigantic Artspace and Cultural Advisor to the Australian Consulate. In Rio de Janeiro, she collaborated with the city and a range of community stakeholders on large-scale projects and major international events, which were showcased at the 2012 United Nations Summit, the 2014 World Cup, and the 2016 Olympics. As Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, she managed programs that included overseeing a variety of film, exhibitions, installations and events programming.
In addition, Dr. Rekow has sat on advisory panels for institutions including New York Foundation for the Arts and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and as a juror for the McArthur Genius Award.
She earned a Ph.D. in Visual Arts from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Australia, and Honors and Master’s degrees in Visual and Media Arts from University of Southern Cross, Australia, while studying on exchange at Pratt Institute in New York.
“I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience to the Broward County Cultural Division and contribute to advancing its mission of catalyzing a vibrant and inclusive creative infrastructure,” Rekow said.
